20!!!!!!!!!! kilos

Now really, how does one travel from Italy to Australia with only 20kilos? We are traveling with Emirate airlines for our flight to Brisbane and we were told that in total each passenger can carry 20kilos, that's about 44lbs. We plan to stay for a minimum of 1yr so how is it possible that we can carry this little weight. Anyway, it looks like we have to send the remainder via Emirates cargo. Cargo will cost for an additional 60kilos 400euros. FEDex and UPS are out of the question as they charge twice as much to ship the same weight.

As our research continues we are finding out more and more about Brisbane and what it has to offer. Enry is a paraglider so we have been looking for paragliding groups that he can join once we are in Brisbane. Paragliding is his second love!

Yes 20 kilos is ridiculous. I've always thought that your baggage allowance should be more when you are travelling to far destinations for long periods of times. I've travelled many times from Australia to Europe nand back and I have always been over with my luggage allowance. On my last trip from Rome to Sydney my bag weighed in at a hefty 34 kilos. I must admit I was pushing it but check-in was kind enough not to charge me extra. Here are my tips for sneaking in those extra kilos free of charge:

a) Arrive very early for check-in. If you can be one of the first in the queue it is always less stressful for the check-in stuff to accept extra kilos for a particular flight.

b)Don't approach the check-in counter looking stressed. Confidence and a smile will make you less of an easy target for additional baggage costs.

c)If a comment is made regarding your excess kilos say that you you really tried to keep things under control but it was really hard to say no to your nonna who insisted you take necessities to her sister she hasn't seen in 50 years.

d)I have always managed to take on more than one carry-on hand luggage. What works best for me is a large uncomplicated backpak that has lots of internat room. I avoid oned with lots of padding, zips and compartments because they are space wasters. In addition to the backpage I also take a medium sized tote to put things in. I have never been stopped for two hand luggages. If anything is said say its your handbag.

d) Check to see if you luggage allowance permits a laptop bag. If so you can put things into that.

Of course be sensible with your packing. Australia has very changeable weather so be sure to pack a variety of things. Brisbane weather is nice so you won't need any heavy coats. I think clothes are less expensive in Australia (in comparison to Italy) so you might only want to bring the necessities.

Don't be scared about the excess luggage. If you really are worried put the items that you least care for in an acessible part of your suitcase so they can easily be removed if you need to eliminate things at the airport.

I really hope you have an excellent experience in Australia.

Yeah 20 kilos if you're a child! Well what do we expect, the airlines have already threatened to weight us as well as our luggage. LOL, I bet that'll be incentive to lose a few pounds. ;)
